How to select the correct domain name for your site

December 9th, 2010 by admin No comments »

Selecting the correct domain name for your site is one of the most important decisions you will make. Domain name is at least as important as the name of a conventional business. Everybody will uniquely indentify your site via your Domain Name just like they would identify any traditional business. But in addition, when it comes to online business, your domain name becomes your destination too. That is your customers will visit you via your domain name. In other words, when it comes to online business, from the customer’s point of view, you name and address is the same (Or at least you should try making so).

What is a domain name anyway?

In very simple terms it is a label for your hosting location. Typically, any server will be identified with its IP address. But nobody will be able to remember an IP address like 100.224.123.12(Even if it is possible who wants to). So the site owners will get a domain name like iGuruLive.Com. When this is typed in to the address bar of your browser, instead of the IP address, still it will load the same files making your website visible to your visitors.

If you like to learn more about domain names, you can follow this Wikipedia Link.

How to select the correct domain name for your site

You have to think about several things when it comes to selecting the perfect domain name. few of them are below.

-          Purpose of the site

  • Depending on the main purpose of your site domain name selection may vary. For an example, if you are trying to brand your existing company via website, you must select the company name as the domain name. It is very simple. If you are Google, you will never go for Gogggle.
  • If you are trying to sell something, it is important your domain name reflects what you are trying to sell. URL or your domain name can do a nice pre sell to your potential customers even before they visit you. For an example, if you are selling Golf accessories, domain name PerfectGolfAccessories.Com will serve your purpose better than GolfHevan.com or something like that.
  • If you are trying to sell advertising space on your site (that is if you are trying to make money with AdSense and affiliate marketing), your domain name must contain your main keywords. If you are selling golf balls, it is a must to have the keyword GolfBalls on your domain name. There are thousands of possibilities to get your keyword variations included in your domain names. You may use hyphens (Although I do not like it) and other related words with the name GolfBalls to get an available domain name. For an example you may buy GolfBallsSecrets.Com. This domain name will create the curiosity while serving important function of telling search engines that your site is about Golf Balls. You will get more traffic and more revenue. But if you find it is not possible to get a domain name with your main keyword(s) in it, do not worry. Still you can do good in SEO. I will show you how.

-          Similar domain names(Including plural)

  • This can be very tricky and needs attention. For an example as per above example, if you get hold of GolfBallsSecrets.com, it is better to buy the GolfBallSecrets.com too (I have removed the “S” from Balls to make it singular). This will add around $10 for your budget, but it is well worth it. You are going to build your site and drive people to it to make money. Last thing you want is to let someone to grab a similar domain name and mislead them to that domain name. Your sale will end there. Remember, there are large number of people will visit your site directly typing your URL on the browser. Chances are they will make mistakes (Especially with “s”, words like “the”). You must cover them as much as possible. Simply buy the obvious looking domain name URL similar to your one and redirect them to the main page, or your correct URL.

-          .Com, .Net, .Org or .Info

  • This confuses everyone. What is the best extension for my domain? I will always go for a .Com. I will almost always buy the .Com. depending on the purpose of the site; I generally will also buy the .Net and .Org domain name with it. For an example if I am buying the GolfBallsSecrets.COM I will also buy the GolfBallsSecrets.NET and GolfBallsSecrets.ORG too. This is to prevent anyone from taking my information and reprint on a .NET or .ORG extensions.
  • Will I buy the .Net if the .Com is not available? NO. I won’t buy it. This is because people will not generally remember the extension of the site. they will assume it is .COM
  • I will go for the relevant local domain names, if my site is heavily localized. For an example if you are from Japan and trying to cater the Japan market (Especially if you trying to sell something physical), it will be good to buy a domain name with .JP extension. It makes the customers feel comfortable as they feel like buying from their own country. But you may have to complete certain legal conditions before buying a country specific domain name.

Where to Buy Domain names

There are thousands of domain name registers around there who will do the Job for you. I have used few personally. Below are some of them.

-          GoDaddy.Com – world’s largest domain name provider. Without any doubt one of the best providers too. I have large number of domain names with them and happy with their service. They will charge you around $10 per annum for a .COM domain name. Provides neat documentation and relatively fast support. I would love to see CHAT support though. I have used their phone support. It is not bad too.

-          NameChep.Com – they are one of the leading providers of domain names. I have seen a trend among the top internet marketers for this service. They provide the few valuable additional services with every domain registration. Among them is my favorite; free Private Domain registration. With this service, your name will not appear publically on the WHOIS register. Good for privacy. Price is little less than of GoDaddy and with the extra services, they add more value to your domain name.

-          Yahoo.Com – Yahoo provides domain name registration services too. I have used them in the inception, due to the brand name they carry. They are not the worst, but I feel like domain name is not their business. Their user interfaces are not very easy to use. They provided the domain name for $1.90 or something like that. Then renewed for about $10. But suddenly after 5 years the fee went up to around $35. I am planning to move my domains with Yahoo to move to some other domain name register.

Buy your perfect domain name and be ready. You will build your money machine on it very soon.

How to do a complete keyword research and analysis for Free

October 13th, 2010 by admin No comments »

In the past post, I introduced you to the concept of keyword research and its importance. Today, I am going to show you what are the information you would need to do a keyword research.

Keyword research is all about indentifying profitable keywords. A profitable keyword is a keyword with high search volume and a low competition and with a high CPC (Mainly if you are building an information site). so you will have to get a keyword;

-          With High Number Of Searches

-          Low Number Of Competing Sites

-          With a Good CPC

How to find keywords with good number of Searches

This process was explained when I explained the niche selection. The only tool I rely on is the Google Keyword Tool. It gives me most of the information I need. Below are the information you can get from the Adwords Keyword tool. Make sure you select the “Phrase Matching” option.

-          Number of searches for a keyword globally(Higher the better)

-          Number of searches for a keyword locally(it is useful specially if you are targeting a country when you build the site)

-          Avg. Estimated CPC for the given keyword(Higher the better)

-          Advertiser competition(Higher the better. Higher advertiser competition generally means high revenue through AdSense)

You can download a list of keywords with the above mentioned data in to a spreadsheet program like excel. Then add two additional columns to the end of the sheet. These are to enter the competition statistics.

How to find keywords with the lowest competing sites

Again, very simple. Take your keyword, go to Google. Make sure you are log out of Google if you are already signed in. Enter your keyword in tot search box and have a look at the number of results displayed just below the search box. Take this down in the first of two columns you left for competition.

Now again enter the same keyword with the Quotation marks on (“Keyword”), and take down the number of results on the next column.

When you complete these two steps for every keyword, you have all the data you need to analyze your keywords.

Effective Keyword Research – Tools and Strategies

October 11th, 2010 by admin No comments »

The second step of the market research is the keyword research. Keyword research is the phase when you go deep in to the market and look for the terms you want to rank for. For an example, if you are in the “Green Carrot” market, you will not be able to get your site ranked for this term on the first go. Even if you do, ranking for such a broad term will not mean much. For an example, when someone looks for “Green Carrot”, they might be looking for Green Carrot photos, or Green Carrot growing methods or even recipes. So ranking for the general term “Green Carrot” might not be as effective as ranking for “Green Carrot Recipes” if you are running a site on recipes. I think you get the idea. This is where keyword research comes to play.

There are two main variables when it comes to keyword analysis. They are;

  1. Number of searches for the given keyword
  2. Competition for the keyword

In addition, I use the CPC for the keyword to determine the profitability of the keyword I am targeting, if I am creating an AdSense site.

When you do the keyword research, you start from the general term (Green Carrot in this instance), and you drill down to specific keywords. Again the tool to use; it is Google.

I use tools, Google Wonder wheel and the Adwords External Keyword tool for this purpose. I will show you how to exactly do your keyword research step by step in the next few posts. I have a method, which I developed, which will give me the exact keyword to chase after.

How to identify a Rich Market to enter

October 7th, 2010 by admin 1 comment »

I taught you how to identify a market with good volume with my last post. Now it is the time to identify whether this market has enough money so that you can earn at least a decent amount by entering it. There is no point in entering a market with 1 million interested visitors if they are not in a position to pay you. On the other hand, if you enter a market with 1000 interested people, each are willing to pay you up to $100, then that is something to consider.

So how do you identify how much money your market has? There are few ways to do this. First and probably the easiest and most effective way is (Especially if you are looking to build an information site and make money with AdSense), is to use Google Keyword tool itself. The new Google Keyword tool (introduced to you in the last post) has the ability to add an Estimated CPC value for each keyword. This shows you how much advertisers are willing to pay for your keyword. If you see bids generally higher than $1, this can be a good market to enter. If the general bids are low, like $0.10, then it may be not profitable enough, if you do not have the volume to rely on.

Other method I use to analyze the market is using Google (yes, again), but this time the search engine. Simply type in your keyword, let’s say “Green Carrot” on Google and see how many advertisers are there. You can identify the advertisers by looking at the Sponsored Links column to the right of the screen and to the top of the search results. If you have more advertisers, you know many people are selling stuff. Then you know more people are earning money in this market. So you can too.

Another tip I would like to give you is, have a look at the advertisements every day and maintain a log of them. If an advertisement shown over a month or so, it has to be profitable (This does not apply to something like Coke or Google itself, as they can afford to lose money even with careless advertising). Then have a look at the product they sell. This will offer you good lead on what market expects and is actually buying.

Among other places where you can develop some intelligence are Amzon, eBay and ClickBank. If something is selling well there, you know market wants it. So you can sell products, advertising space or both with ease on your site. These are profitable markets, which are hot, with good number of buyers currently. All you want is to get your share.

If you like this post, don’t forget to click the Like Button below.

If you follow the instructions, you will have at least one market you identify as hot with good amount of money. Now it is about identifying how to make money with least amount of effort. This is where I have developed a system on my own. Once identified a niche, I can virtually dominate it with my method. I am thinking about sharing it with you. Have a closer look.

Why and How to select the niche with correct size

October 6th, 2010 by admin No comments »

Selecting the correct niche is very important in your internet carrier. This is what can make or break your internet dream. If you choose the wrong niche you will not make money nor are you going to have the freedom you are looking for. You will end up working more and earning less.

Today, we are going to understand the size of the market. If you enter a tiny market, with only couple of hundreds of interested people, you will not likely to make money like if you would do with a larger market. But how large it should be? You may ask.

The answer is it should be large enough to help you achieve the financial goals you are after. For an example, if you sell mansions each priced at few million dollars, then entering that market would make sense even if it has only few interested people. One sale would do the job for you. But on the other hand, if you are entering a market with 100 interested people, even if each is going to pay you a $10 without any problem, you are only going to earn $1000 bucks. This may not be enough for the effort you have to put in. In contrast, if you can enter a market with 10,000 people and each are willing to pay you just $1, you will do incredibly well. I think you get the idea now.

How to identify the size of market?

Finding the number of interested people in the service or the product you are going to offer is easier online than offline. You have many online tools to help you. My favorite is Google Keyword tool. Google keyword tool is a free tool which gives you information about the number of searches carried out on Google. If more people are searching for it, you know large numbers are actively looking for the service you are going to offer. For an example, if you are going to sell “Green Carrots” or something like that, you go to the tool and enter your keyword. It will show you how many people have searched for this keyword last month. If also will show some related searches.

If you get a good number of searches for the term you used, you know you have a market with good size. You can even drill down to the level of the country and check for the number of “Local searches”.

Now you know the size of the market, it is time to see how much of money is there. Lest discuss that in the next post.

1st Step of Making Money Online: Selecting the Correct Niche

September 30th, 2010 by admin No comments »

Do you want to make good money online? First advice is not to rush. You have to spend some time doing your research. If you hurry and build a site, most likely, if you have any, success will be by chance. You will not be able to replicate your success and will be limited by the amount of money you make. Most importantly, you will have more chance of not succeeding. This is where most of the new internet entrepreneurs will end their journey. I am sure you do not want to end there, do you?

The first step is the most important step in entering the internet era.  Selecting the correct niche to enter can make or break your internet presence.  If you manage to select the correct niche, you will go far.

Selecting the correct niche is an art. It requires a good feel. Some people can make the call after few minutes of work, and some needs little longer. But the reality is we all can learn how to select the correct niche to enter.

I use the below criteria when I select a good niche to dig into.

  1. Niche needs to have good amount of internet searches
  2. There has to be good competition in the niche (Hmmmm… wondering why? I will explain)
  3. There has to be good number of long terms sellers and advertisers

In addition to the above selection criteria, I always prefer to enter a market which I myself or any of the people who are working for me have at least some understanding about. If you are a beginner, I think you have to enter a market you have some interest in. This will make it much easier for you to understand the process. Once you are comfortable with the process of making money online, you can replicate your success across markets, regardless of whether you have the expertise in each of them.

We will discuss each of the topics in detail in the coming posts. Meanwhile, if you like this blog, please help me to spread the word. Please tweet this post and click the LIKE button to share it on Facebook.

Where to begin your online money making journey?

September 27th, 2010 by admin No comments »

It is important to understand where to begin your online journey. We discussed three online money making models already. Now it is your turn to get into the business and make some money online. But where to begin?

This is the same question most of the internet marketers have in the beginning. This is where most of them fail, even before they start. So it is very important for you to understand where to begin. So let me ask you a question? Where do you think we should begin our online journey? OK, tell me, yes, you tell me…..

If you find hard to answer the question, let me give you the answer. The answer is “It Depends”. (I can hear you say, ###%$&^%$ Com ON #%^*#@#). But this is the truth. Where you begin will depend on your intention, your intention of being online.

Not everyone comes online to make money. For some it is a hobby. Some come to brand themselves or even to brand their products. But the good news is, for you, who want to make money; I have a pretty good answer.

If you are online to make money, you will have to find the profitable niche first. Remember, if you want to be everywhere, you will be nowhere. So understanding and selecting where you want to be, is of paramount importance. The selection you make here will either make or break your entire internet dream. So be very careful. No I am not joking. This will define whether you earn $100,000 or $10 or even a $0. How do I know? From the first hand experience.

I am not here to tell you how hard it is to make money online. I know not everyone can make a $100,000 a week or so. But for me everyone with some knowledge and little experience is good to earn decent income online. So I am going to tell you good news. Seriously, there are people who will charge you hundreds of dollars just to teach you how to select a good niche to be in. But I am not going to charge you a penny for this. But the method is proven; I have used it over and over again when I enter different markets.

How to select a profitable market to be in

Selection of profitable market is not as difficult as you may think. First let me assume you are going to build an Information site and earn revenue mainly through advertisements. If you want to sell a product this might change a little. But do not worry. We will get to it too.

There are two main steps when it comes to selecting a profitable niche for information site. They are;

  1. Niche research
  2. Keyword research

Basically in niche research, you select a good market to enter. In the keyword research you select the best keywords to target. I will explain you each step in the coming articles.

Different Online Business Models – Selling stuff + Selling Advertising Space

September 25th, 2010 by admin No comments »

In the past few posts we discussed how to make money online. We discussed two main methods of making money. First method is by selling stuff online. Second method is by selling advertising space to advertisers. Today we discuss a new method, doing the first and second both together.

Yes, you can make use of both these online money making methods to create an income. Simply you sell advertising space to the advertisers as mentioned in the previous lesson while you sell your own or other people’s products as an affiliate. This can work good or bad depending on the situation. But if it works well, you will get best of both worlds. You will earn revenue from selling product or services and you will earn money by selling advertising space. This can be a killer combination to online money due to few reasons.

First, online, very few people do buy when they visit a site. Accepted average is 1%. That is if you are selling something, when 100 people visit your site, only 1 will buy. Again these figures can vary widely. But let’s do the math using these numbers. Now when 1 person buys what happens to the other 99% of the people. They will just leave your site.

On the other hand, if you have a good layout, AdSense ad click through can be around 4-5%. That is if 100 people came to your site around 4 to 5 people will click on the ads on your site. If you send 100 people to a page where you sell something and if you have ads on them, chances are some people will click on the ads and go to the advertisers sites without just leaving you. So you will have a secondary stream of income. But you must make sure your potential customer is not clicking the ads before they make the purchase. In this case you will lose more money than you will earn.

So how to make sure your actual buyers are not clicking on the ads before buying? You have to test your site. How to test? Simple, first you create the page without ads. You sell products through this site for a month or so. Now you will know the conversion rates. Then you place ads and run your site for another month or so. If you do get the same conversion or even a slightly lower conversation and if you earn more money by selling advertising space than losing an occasional sale, then by all means go ahead and do it. You can use split testing tools like Google Website Optimizer to check both the scenarios together. This program will allow you to randomly send visitors to both the pages simultaneously. Then you can check the winning combination.

We will discuss more about these money making methods in the time to come. I will give you my personal experiences, methods I follow to get high Click Through Rates. Different Online Business Models – Selling Advertising Space

September 24th, 2010 by admin No comments »

In the last post we discussed how to make money online by selling stuff. You can sell something of your own like an eBook or a video series, or you can sell somebody else’s product for a commission (AKA Affiliate Marketing). Today I am going to introduce you to a new method of monetizing your websites. You can make money by selling advertising space on your website.

How to Make Money Online By Selling Advertising SpaceWhen you sell advertising space to advertisers, you do not have to make products, nor will you have to sell other peoples product. So it is much easier to sell advertising space on your site than selling a product or a service. There are two ways you can earn money selling advertising space.

  1. Cost per action basis(This is commonly used with cost per click basis and known as CPC)
  2. Cost per thousand impression basis (This is known as CPM advertising)

There are other methods like where you can charge for a specific period of time. Above two methods are the most common ways to sell advertising space online.

Cost Per Action Advertisements(CPA)

Cost Per Action advertisements will pay you when user sees the advertisement on your site and take an specific action like clicking on the link on the advertisement, or calling the number on the ad or buying something after clicking the link and so on. Most common and easy to use method is the CPC or Cost Per Click advertisement. They are simple to use. You publish the ads from the advertiser. When a visitor clicks on your advertisement, you will get the credit and money for the click you generated for them. Amount you earn on the click will vary widely on the segment of the market you are catering to, competition among the advertisers to advertise and so on. So there are no good or bad amounts per click. But I will be happy if I can get around $.040 to $0.50 per click. I get much more in some markets and as little as $0.10 in some other markets.

CPC advertising is simply a function of many factors. First is the number of people visiting your site. Then the percentage of people clicking on your ads. Then the amount advertisers pay for a click. Let do some math here. Let’s say you get below numbers;

Number of Visitors a Day = 1000

Percentage Of People Clicking on the ads = 5%

Amount paid per click by advertiser (On average) = $0.40

Amount you earn Per Day = Number of Visitors per Day x (% Of People Clicking/100)* Amount Advertisers Pay

Amount you earn Per Day = 1000 x (5/100)* 0.40

= $20

So you will earn $20 dollars with this site per day. Change the variables and see the differences each change can bring.

For an example if you can increase the Click Through Rate (number of people clicked on your ad) by 1% you will make $24 (this is a 20% increase in your bottom-line).

CPM Advertising

In this type of advertising, you make money only based on the impressions you provide for your advertiser. Advertisers will pay you a flat fee for displaying their ads for 1000 times on your site. CPM may vary widely depending on the audience your site attracts and the competition out there. This type of advertising is very good if you get thousands of people to your site daily and they stay and go from page to page of your site.

The good thing about this type advertising is, there is no need for you to worry about how many people going to click on the ads. Even if no one clicked on the ad, you will still earn money. On the other hand, these ads will pay you less than the CPC ads generally. You will have to do the math before you accept the advertisement. For an example, in the earlier example you earned $20 for the ad position you sold (for 1000 visitors). If you are running a CPM ad on your site you will have to make sure you get a minimum of $20 per thousand impressions, unless you are making a strategic move.

How to find advertisers for my site

This is a different subject altogether. But let me give you some quick tips. There are mainly two ways you can use.

  1. Directly sell ad space to the advertiser
  2. Sell through a third party service

Selling directly to the advertisers

This is self explanatory I guess. You go to the possible advertisers. You tell them about your site and gains you can bring to the advertiser. Then you sell advertising space to the advertiser. Generally this is done in CPM basis, and charged monthly.

Selling advertising space through third parties

This is the easiest way to sell advertising space. There are very popular programs out there which will allow you to put a simple piece of code on your site and they will automate the entire process for you. They will create the ads, they will display matching ads on your site and even they will collect money and will send you the check every month or so. For all this they will keep commission from your earnings.

If you are just a beginner, this is the way you should go. There are many programs out there, but none is popular than the Google AdSense program. Yahoo has a similar program. AdBrite and Bidvertiser are some others.

I mainly use AdSense, and they are good for number of reasons. They have very large ad inventory. They virtually never run out of ads. They match the ads accurately to your content. So your chances of getting relevant ad are very high. They pay on time. Yes, I have never missed a check from them. They offer you detailed reporting and high end programs to manage ads. They have both CPM and CPC ads and they generally deliver the best ad for you, simply because if you earn more, they will earn more. For all their trouble they will keep a percentage from your advertising revenue. I am more than happy to give them that money and the load of headache and more than happy to collect the check at the end of the month.

I will take you through these programs in detail. For now, please leave your comment. If you like this post says so by clicking on the LIKE button below.

Different Online Business Models – Selling Stuff

September 23rd, 2010 by admin No comments »

In the last post we discussed three methods of making money online. First was “Selling Stuff”. It is surprisingly similar to the normal offline businesses. You sell something your customer wants, and you get money in exchange for the product or the services you provide. It is simple. One of the great sellers online is Amazon. They simply sell products which were used to sell offline and collect money from the buyers online.

What to sell online (Physical products or e Products)

How to Make Money Online - Selling StuffBut there are notable differences between selling online vs selling offline. Selling online requires no store so it is less costly to sell online. It is easier to sell electronic products like MP3 or eBooks online due to the nature of the product. You can deliver these stuff electronically to the customer hence there is no cost involved in distribution of goods. So these products can be sold with a good profit margins and customer will also be benefited as the relative price will be less when compared to a DVD or a Book physically delivered. But this is not to say you cannot sell physical products online. There are people doing great selling physical products online. Even Amazon mostly sells physical stuff online.

How to sell products online

You can sell stuff online simply by putting up a website, driving people into the site and processing the order and collecting money. When you get the order, if you are delivering physical goods, you send them to the address they have given while completing the order. If you are delivering an eBook or a video series or an audio series, you can do so by providing your customer with the link to the download area of your site. Not so complicated right?

What to sell Online

So the obvious question is “what am I going to sell online?” there are two options for you.

  1. You create your own product and sell it
  2. You sell other people’s stuff for a commission(This is called affiliate marketing)

Creating your own product and selling it

Creating your own product is not hard as you may think, especially if you are creating an e-product. You can sell your skills online by creating a “how to” video series and publishing them. You can write an eBook by typing your stuff on a word document and then by converting to a PDF (called an eBook). Similarly you can create an audio series too. It is not hard to do this especially if you start with something you know. You will be amazed to see how much of a demand your knowledge will have. Let’s say you know how to make roses with papers or something. I am sure you will still get customers who want to learn this. They will pay you well to learn from you. This is why I encourage all of my friends to present online. You can sell your skills to a broader audience than you think. They will most probably pay you better than your job do.

Selling other people’s stuff for a commission (Also known as Affiliate Marketing)

If you have heard the fancy term “Affiliate Marketing”, this is what it is all about. Affiliate marketing is nothing but selling other people’s stuff for a commission. Big supermarkets do not produce all the stuff they sell themselves. They sell other people’s stuff for a commission. When it comes to online, this is known as Affiliate marketing.
Some people have products they own. They sell them online. But they cannot reach enough customers by selling themselves. So they pay you a commission for the sales you generate for them. Amazon.Com is one of the pioneers of using affiliates to reach customers. They pay between 5 to 6% commission for the people who refer them to the products. Digital affiliate market places like ClickBank, facilitate these transactions. Generally when you sell you can expect greater commissions from 25% to 75% for the sale.
One advice before you even think about doing affiliate marketing. Never ever promote products just looking at the commissions they offer. There are rubbish products which will offer you very high commissions. If you do not really believe on the quality of the product, never ever offer them to your customers. First of all, most of these market places (Specially ClickBank) cover its customers with 100% Money back guarantees for 60 Days of purchase. Even if you successfully convinced your customers to buy a product of no or little value to them, they will always ask for a refund. So you will lose the effort you put in to the sales process as you will not get the commission. In addition you will lose the customer trust, which cannot be measured in dollars. So never ever promote a product which you do not know about or you do not believe in. It is good to buy the product yourself before you recommend it to the others. Always think how you can help your customer with the product you are recommending them. If you honestly think it will solve their problems go ahead and recommend them to your customers. If not never recommend the product to the customer.

So these are two main ways of selling online. I will give more details step by step in the coming posts. Until then please leave your comments. If you like this post says so by clicking the “FaceBook Like Button” below.
